Introduction

Vigyan Ashram has designed and developed a Rice Thresher Machine mainly for small-scale farmers to reduce manual labor, save time and improve threshing efficiency during paddy processing. The project was developed by Vigyan Ashram in collaboration with Shree Bairavnath Vidyamandir,Vahangaon.

The Rice Thresher Machine is designed to provide an affordable, easy-to-operate and durable solution for rural farming communities. It helps in separating rice grains from harvested paddy efficiently, reducing grain losses and improving overall productivity for small and marginal farmers.

Need for it…

  • To develop a simple, economical and replicable rice threshing solution for small-scale farmers.
  • To reduce labor dependency, threshing time and labor costs compared to traditional manual threshing methods.
  • To minimize grain losses and improve threshing efficiency during paddy processing.
  • To promote affordable rural mechanization and improve post-harvest management for farmers.

Product Description

The Rice Thresher Machine consists of a rectangular vertical structural frame fabricated using MS square pipes and L-angles. A rotating threshing drum is mounted centrally on a shaft and fitted with beating spikes for efficient separation of paddy grains from straw.

Power transmission is achieved through a pulley drive system connected to a 1 HP electric motor. The motor operates at 1440 RPM and is coupled with a gearbox having a reduction ratio of 1:28. Further pulley reduction brings the final drum speed to approximately 35–36 RPM, suitable for effective threshing operation.

Also, the machine is hand-operated, as a handle is attached to the pulley for the rotation of the threshing drum, enabling smooth and easy operation. Sieve arrangements are provided to separate straw, husk and paddy grains efficiently during operation. The separated paddy is collected at the outlet while lighter straw is discharged separately, improving cleaning and reducing grain losses.

The machine is designed for small-scale farmers and can be fabricated using locally available materials and standard workshop practices.

Detailed fabrication drawings and BOM are provided in the design documentation.

Developed Rice Thresher Machine

Key Features

  • Dual operation mode – can be operated using both electric motor and hand-operated mechanism during electricity shortages.
  • Reduces manual labor, operator effort and threshing time compared to traditional methods.
  • Improves threshing efficiency with better separation of paddy and straw while minimizing grain losses.
  • Requires fewer laborers, thereby reducing overall threshing cost for farmers.
  • Suitable for small-scale and marginal farmers with simple, economical and easy-to-maintain construction.

Field Demonstration of the Machine by Students in Both Motor-Operated and Hand-Operated Modes

Capacity & Cost

  • Threshing Capacity: Approx. 500 kg of rice/paddy in 2 hours of operation.(Motor Operated)
  • Fabrication Cost: Approx. ₹30,000 to ₹35,000 per unit (varies depending on material selection, motor specification, gearbox, pulley arrangement and fabrication cost).

The machine reduces labour requirement and operator effort compared to traditional threshing methods, while improving threshing efficiency and reducing overall processing time for Farmers.
