Assignment-DWC hydroponics

The term Hydroponics comes from the Greek words hydro (water) and ponos (labor). It is a soil less growing technique that utilizes a nutrient and water solution in place of the nutrients that a plant extracts from soil.

Material Required:

Beds
Cups/Netpots
Oxygen bubbler
Spinach seeds
Cocopit
Chemical nutrients.

Started the DWC project. I done setup of the DWC bed.

22/07/2022

Checked the leakages in the bed of the DWC and repaired the leaks by covering the holes using sellotape. Then I filled the water in the DWC bed.

Measurement of volume of water in the DWC bed:

Steps:

Measured the length and width of the DWC bed.
Measured the height of the water from the different points.
Calculated volume of water:

Calculate the average height by using the heights at different points.

H_{1 =}0.1 m;

H₂= 0.13 m;

H₃ =0.12 m;

H₄= 0.8 m;

H₅= 0.12 m;

h=H₁+H₂+H₃+H₄+H₅/5

h = (0.1+0.13+0.12+0.8+0.12)/5

h = 0.11 m

l = 3.4 m; w = 1.1 m

V = l*w*h

= 3.4 *1.1*0.11

= 0.4114 m³

Hence, V = 411.4 l (in litres)

4. Then for the oxygen supply, I added oxygen bubbler to the water.

5. Then I filled the cups with the coco powder and planted spinach in it.

6. Then I put the cups in the thermocol.

7. After finishing the setup, I measured the pH, EC and TDS of the water.

Readings:

pH = 8.1

EC = 434

TDS = 204

Nutrient Dosing:

I added the following nutrients to the DWC water:

**While adding nutrients to the water.**

After completion of dosing, I measured pH of the water. The pH reading is 7.1 and for maintaining maintaining pH level I added 1 ml of phosphoric acid.

Measured the pH and of the water.

pH= 6.6

Added a new thermocol sheet and planted new plants in the system and added an oxygen bubbler. Also, cleaned the area inside the poly house.

**Collecting spinach for transplanting into the DWC system**

Also taken readings of pH, EC and TDS.

21/08/2022 to 28/08/2022

I harvested the spinach from the chemical DWC hydroponics system by plucking the leaves of the spinach. The harvested spinach was weighed 433 gm.

29/08/2022 to 04/09/2022

Refilled water in both chemical and organic DWC hydroponics. Observed that the spinach in the chemical DWC bed has encountered with the magnesium deficiency.

Dixit Sir taken review and suggested to increase the TDS of chemical DWC bed. And discussed about how we can urine to the hydroponics system.

5/09/2022 to 11/09/2022

In this week, I added nutrients to the chemical DWC water. Then I measured the pH, EC and TDS of the water after adding nutrients. Added Phosphoric acid to lower down the pH of the water.

Measured pH,EC and TDS of the water. pH was increased, so I added phosphoric acid to water.
