Introduction / Need of project
1) In India, due to urbanization in metro cities the waste created is 42 million tones annually from this 40%
to 50% waste is valuable that can be decomposed to compost.
2) Due to this waste the water and air pollution is increasing.
3) As this waste contaminates the water there is spread of diseases, due to this human beings and animals
are suffering.
4) By dumping waste in land produces methane gas which is more harmful than carbon dioxide.
Objectives
1) To reduce smell of waste by maintaining C:N ratio.
2) To take trial of waste decomposition on Society Composter.
3) To observe and analyze the data.
Methodology
1) Maintain the C:N ratio by mixing brown matter.
2) Water content can be maintained by adding dry matter.
3) Odour can be reduced by spraying the BARC culture and also helps in decomposition.

Today I fitted all the plates of composter. 3 locks of plates of composter were missing so I and Pawan made new locks with the help of rod.
We kept buckets for kitchen waste in Pabal School and Jain Temple, also took 12 kg of kitchen waste from ashram kitchen.
Today there was vegetable market in the village so we brought about 48 kg of vegetable waste.
Today waste collected was 60 kg.

Today we brought, 6 kg of kitchen waste from Jain temple, 7.5 kg Pabal School & 3.5 kg from Ashram kitchen.
Today waste collected was 17 kg. Two days collection was 77 kg.
We sprayed 3.5 liters of BARC culture on 77 kg waste.
We filled the waste after the culture was sprayed as following:

Rack 2 = 31kg
Rack 3 = 21kg

Observations:
- Litchet dropping in more amount.
- Foul smell was coming.
- Composting was not good due to water content.
Solution
So we deicide to add sawdust about 30% in proportion of waste.

As the water was leaching from the racks 1.2&3, so we removed the waste from racks.
We removed 38 kg waste from rack 1&2 and 60 kg from rack 3,4,5 and added todays 12 kg waste.
33 kg of saw dust was added in 110 kg of waste and spread 2 liter of culture was added, later we filled this waste in the racks again.

Rack 3 = 44kg waste + 2kg cattle feed = 46kg

There was an two days exhibition program organized by Vigyan Ashram. Many people visited the ashram. I learned many things like communication skills, how to interact with various peoples from children to adults. The experience was very good.

Observations after adding sawdust:
- Litchet dropping was reduced
- Smell is reduced.
- Moisture content is less.
- Temperature of racks were increasing after 3days to 50-60°c and after 6-7 days reduced to 25-30°c .

As the mixer has mesh on the side of motor, so the compost is falling on the flywheel of the motor. So we decided to close that side and make new lid with mesh. So today we made the frame of the lid.

Total 11kg waste collected, mixed 2kg saw dust (removed) and 0.5 liter of culture is spread and filled in Rack 5
Rack 5 : 11+2+0.5= 13kg
Measured the temperature of the racks.
Rack 1 : 40°c ; Rack 2 : 28°c ; Rack 3 : 34°c ; Rack4 : 28°c ; Rack6: 30°c ; Rack7 : 30°c
Removed Rack 2,4 = 22kg and filled in mixer.
From kitchen waste we filled 686 kg waste in 45 days and after 50 days we got 110kg compost.
We used this compost further as dry matter for the next trial of composter after adding BSF.
Conclusion
The Society composter is suitable to use in the societies as we used sawdust to reduce smell and leaking litchet and control the moisture content in the composting rack.
By using BARC microbial culture the decomposition rate of waste increase, so composting biodegradable wet waste by bacterial culture is a good solution. Such culture is cheap (50 Rs for 1 liter)
I also learnt various aspects like welding, using drill machine, grinder, etc. while repairing and making new items for mixer and rack.
From the trials that we took on society composter, we proved that the composting of 30-40kg kitchen waste can be done every day. The compost manure is formed on 8th day.
