Optimization for curing of society garbage

Introduction :

Project on society composter at Rajgurunagar worked by Mahesh and Shrikant.I want to take trials of decomposed waste from the same society composter.

Need of project:

The most difficult issue in urban waste management is foul smell.The project is aim trying an suitable methodology for composting free from foul smell.

Materials and Equipment:

1. WoodSawdust (10 kg) 5. Weighing Balance
2. BARC Solution (39 lit)
3. Waste (36 kg)
4. Composter

Objective :

1. .To study and optimise options for 7 days cured society garbage with out smell and insect infection.

Procedure :

1. Firstly, I put the 10 kg sawdust ,8 kg culture (BARC solution) and 2 kg waste in composter.
2. Composter connected to timer and 7AM to 7PM as well as from 7PM set timer at 10PM,1AM and 4AM at interval one hour and turns off after 2min.

(Ajay had fixed the timer to the hydrophonic system.The same timer was connected to composter by Srikanth and Mahesh.Both had worked on this composter a few days ago.)

Procedure :

1. Add the 2 kg waste and 1kg culture in composter.

DATE : 08/05/2022

Procedure :

1. Again I put the 2kg waste and 1kg culture in composter.

Observation :

1. The odor is less than the smell of decomposed waste in seven days.

DATE : 10/05/2022

Procedure :

1. I check the pH of the waste and pH is 7.57.
2. Put the 2kg waste and 2 lit culture in shredder.
3. Since the sawdust in the shredder is getting dry,I put 2 lit culture in it.

Procedure :

1. The total waste in the composter was 30 kg.
2. Composter was completely filled so I took out 14 kg of waste from the composter.

Observation :

1. Good decomposition of waste in composter is taking place.

Procedure :

1. I check the pH of waste in composter is 5.02
2. It is acidic so 200 gm lime was added to it then his pH was checked and got 5.53

DATE : 20/05/2022

Procedure :

1. The total waste in the composter was 34 kg.
2. Composter was completely filled so I took out 26 kg of waste from the composter.
3. Put the 4kg waste and 2lit culture in the composter.
4. Again add 100 gm lime in composter then his pH was checked and got 5.82

Observation:

1. The stench of garbage is less than before.

Since the composter was completely closed,the smell was not reduced,but it needed an areation,so it was decided to make holes.This was decided in the discussion.

Procedure :

1. After discussing with Dixit Sir it decided to remove or cut the two sides of the composter and joined mesh on two sides.

1. Firstly,we cut the sides of composter with correct dimensions.

1. We joined mesh to composter on both sides for ventilation.

Procedure :

1. We installed the system and started to taking trails.
2. Add 6kg waste and 2lit culture in the composter.

Calculation :

Side length=a=24.5cm=0.245m

Height=b=50.5cm=0.505m

Area of composter= 3√3÷2×(s^2)

. = 3√3÷2×(0.245)

. = 0.1557=0.3114m2

Length of rectangle=l=5mm=0.5cm=0.05m

. =b=5mm=0.5cm=0.05m

Area of rectangle=l×b

. = 0.05×0.05

. = 2.5×10^-5

Numbers of hole = 5856

Area of hole=2.5×10^-5×5856

. = 0.1464

Total exposure area = Area of hexagon- Area of hole

. = 0.3114-0.1464

. = 0.165

In % = Area of hole×100÷exposure area +6×l×b

. = 0.1464×100÷0.165+6×0.05×0.05

. = 81.33

= 81%

                                                       

Data Sheet :

Result:

1. I tried to reduce the smell of waste with this process.I got 50% result.
2. This composter is used for further maturation of its pre-mature waste as well as mostly it works act as a shredder.

Conclusion:

1. Decomposition rate is good.
2. This composter is useful for 50 household waste.

Suggestions:

If you want to reduce the odor completely,you can try these two things are as follows:

1. After seven days,if you take it out of the waste from composter and do not put it in water,its odor may decrease.
2. If the composted waste had been put in direct composter it would not have smelled bad.
3. In  composter I had put waste ;wood saw dust and culture in the ratio of 20:20:80 or 40:20:80.
