WHAT IS HYDROPONICS ?

Hydroponics is a type of horticulture and a subset of hydroculture which involves growing plants (usually crops) without soil, by using mineral nutrient solutions in an aqueous solvent.

Hydroponics offers many advantages, notably a decrease in water usage in agriculture.

Hydroponics dosing
:- Electrical Conductivity is the measure of total dissolved salts in a solution, the factor that influences a plant’s ability to absorb water. In hydroponics applications , monitoring salinity helps manage the effects of soluble salts on plant growth.

From Date 05-07-2021 to 13-07-2021 hydroponics doing was done to maintain EC to 2000 .

Azolla bed construction :- 3 beds Azolla beds were constructed .

As azolla has high protein content it is necessary to grow it and bring it in our food chain , various trials are carried out in ashram .

Azolla floats on the surface of water by means of numerous small, closely overlapping scale-like leaves, with their roots hanging in the water.

They form a symbiotic relationship with the cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae , which fixes atmospheric nitrogen .

SOIL TESTING :-

WHY IS SOIL TESTING MPORTANT ?

  • Gain knowledge about the soil condition and how to improve it. Fertile soils are necessary to grow healthy crops. .
  • 2) It is the first step into soil fertility management. .
  • 3) Minimize fertilizer expenditures. .
  • 4) Avoid over-fertilization’s. .
  • 5) Avoid soil degradation.

So , I have tested 17 soil samples in our vigyan ashram soil lab .

Koi are a type of carp, a common fish that can be found all over the world, but what makes Koi so special is their coloring and lineage. There are regular competitions to name the top koi and just like prized dog breeds, Japanese people take koi breeding very seriously.

we want to bring azolla in food chain , but azolla is heavy to digest because of high lignin content .

So We are using azolla as feed for koi fish as it has a high nutrific value various combinations of azolla are used for feeding koi fish

Estimating concentration of Nitrates and Ammonia in fish water :- Ammonia is toxic to fish if allowed to accumulate in fish production systems. When ammonia accumulates to toxic levels, fish can not extract energy from feed efficiently.

If the ammonia concentration gets high enough, the fish will become lethargic and eventually fall into a coma and die.

Azolla harvesting for koi fish feeding :- Azolla is a highly productive plant. It doubles its biomass in 2 days or more . It is reach in proteins hence we are trying to bring azolla in our food chain . We are taking trials on it and we are using azolla as a fish feed .

Azolla is given to koi fish by fermenting and boiling it .

Determination of Hardness of water samples:-

Hardness in water is due to the presence of dissolved salts of calcium and magnesium.

It is unfit for drinking, bathing, washing and it also forms scales in boilers. Hence it is necessary to estimate the amount of hardness producing substances present in the water sample. Once it is estimated, the amount of chemicals required for the treatment of water can be calculated.

The estimation of hardness is based on complexometric titration. Hardness of water is determined by titrating with a standard solution of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) which is a complexing agent.

Since EDTA is insoluble in water, the disodium salt of EDTA is taken for this experiment. EDTA can form four or six coordination bonds with a metal ion.

Total hardness :-

Hardness is most commonly expressed as milligrams of calcium carbonate equivalent per litre. Water containing calcium carbonate at concentrations below 60 mg/l is generally considered as soft; 60–120 mg/l, moderately hard; 120–180 mg/l, hard; and more than 180 mg/l, very hard.

Procedure :-

  1. 20 ml of the given water sample is pipetted out into a clean conical flask.
  • 5 ml ammonia buffer and 2 drops of EBT indicator are added and titrated against EDTA from the burette.
  • The end point is the change of colour from wine red to steel blue. The titration is repeated to get concordant titre value.

End point :- wine red to steel blue

Estimation of total hardness

Estimation of Permanent Hardness:-

  1. 100 ml of the given sample of water is pipetted out into a clean beaker and boiled for 20 minutes.
  2. It is then filtered to remove the precipitate formed due to the decomposition of temporary hardness producing salts.
  3. The filtrate is made up to 100 ml in standard measuring flask (SMF) using distilled water. 20 ml of the made up solution is pipetted out into a conical flask, 5 ml ammonia buffer and 2 drops of EBT indicator are added and titrated against the EDTA.
  4.  The end point is the change of colour from wine red to steel blue. The titration is repeated to get concordant titre value.
Estimation of permanent hardness

Temporary Hardness

The temporary hardness is calculated from the total and permanent hardness.

Temporary Hardness = Total Hardness  –  Permanent Hardness

Preparation Nutrient agar and PDA agar plates :- 20 plates of nutrient agar and 20 plates of PDA were poured .

Why to use nutrient agar ?

Nutrient Agar is used for the cultivation of bacteria and for the enumeration of organisms in water, sewage, feces and other materials

Composition of nutrient agar :-

Ingredient1 L500 mL
Yeast extract2 g1 g
Peptone5 g2.5 g
Sodium chloride (NaCl)5 g2.5 g
agar15 g7.5 g

Why to use PDA ?

Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) is used for the cultivation of fungi.

Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) is a general purpose medium for yeasts and molds that can be supplemented with acid or antibiotics to inhibit bacterial growth. .

PDA can be used for growing clinically significant yeast and molds.

Azolla bed construction :- Azolla (mosquito fern, duckweed fern, fairy moss, water fern) is a genus of seven species of aquatic ferns in the family Salviniaceae. They are extremely reduced in form and specialized, looking nothing like other typical ferns but more resembling duckweed or some mosses.

Azolla Bed Size – 12’x9’x1’Durable and easy to install , These Bags are suitable for Azolla cultivation and has multi uses like duck pond, fish pond.
