Objective : To Study that, DC pump has higher efficiency than AC pump.

Comparison between AC & DC pump:

As we have installed DC fans in our campus which are giving same output air as of AC fans gives, but the power consumption of DC fans are relatively lower than AC fans. So that we started thinking that, If DC fan gives high efficiency then we checked the efficiency of DC pump.

AC and DC pump were arranged with same input which was having same numbers of bends, length and height. There were 25 number of bends, 4 convergent and divergent joints, 4 T joints. The total head of the pipeline was 8 m. Comparison between two pumps was tested at ground level and peak height level and then got some results as follows:

When tested at peak level:

Observed Voltage: 240 V,

Observed Current: 3.59 A,

Volume of container: 20 liters,

Time required to fill the container: 22.76 sec

Thus for 1 sec: 0.86 liter water

therefore 52.17 LPM discharge observed on ground level for AC pump.

total power consumption 989 watt/ liter

When tested at ground level:

Observed voltage: 240 V,

Observed current: 4.37 A,

Volume of container: 20 liter

Time required to fill the container : 15 sec

thus 1.17 liters per sec discharge

total power consumption 787 watt/ liter

When tested at ground level:

Observed voltage: 137 V,

Observed current: 6.37 A

Volume of container: 20 liter

Time required to fill the container : 17 sec

Thus for 1 sec: 1.17 liter water

total power consumption 573.76 watt/ liter

When tested at peak level:

Observed voltage: 139 V/ 99.7 V

Observed current: 4.9 A/ 6.37 A

Volume of container: 20 liter

Time required to fill the container : 17.85 sec

total power consumption 608 watt/ liter

Therefore, 989-608= 381 Watts saving/ liter for DC pump

Efficiency: 381/989*100= 38.52%

From the above comparative calculations we can see that DC pump consumes less power and gives more output than AC pump.

Thus, from the above readings we can say that DC water pump is 38% more efficient than AC water pump.
