For this project we read blog of Arpita di, Aasawari di and Pradnya di

http://vadic.vigyanashram.blog/2022/02/20/effect-of-different-levels-of-organic-carbon-on-water-holding-capacity-of-soil/

INTRODUCTION:

Soil organic carbon is a measureable component of soil organic matter. It has an important role in the physical, chemical and biological function of agricultural soils. Organic carbon influences many soil characteristics including nutrient and water holding capacity, nutrient cycling and stability, improved water infiltration and aeration.

Water Holding Capacity is the ability of a certain soil texture to physically hold water against the force of gravity. It is important to know the water holding capacity of the soil to determine how much water storage capacity the field has, and to determine how much supplemental irrigation should be applied.

OBJECTIVES:

1) To study the effect of organic carbon on water holding capacity of soil.

2) To study the effect of organic on crop yield.

NEED OF PROJECT:

The organic carbon of soil is decreased leading to low microbes in soil which causes high demand of fertilizers and low water holding capacity of soil. Hence, the demand of water is increased leading to higher pollution and ecological imbalance.

Hence, use of organic carbon in field will be beneficial to farmers.

REPREPARATION OF BED AND CLEAN THE BED:

Preparation of bed

The experiment is to be carried out in beds of 2*2ft. Total 9 beds were prepared of red soil, black soil and VA soil. Totally 27 beds were prepared. The beds were already prepared by Arpita di. Some unwanted grass is grown on that bed, so first I clean up all the beds and free the soil in bed with the help of khurpi. Arrange soil in the bed in proper way.

TYING OF SHADENET:

The shadenet is already tied by Arpita di but it takes many duration that’s why it’s not in proper condition. So I release it all and again tie the shadenet to bamboo and rod.

SOWING:

After cleaning the beds and arranging the soil, sowing of spinach seeds is done with the help of khurpi at the spacing of 15*15 cm. Four seed were dug in each hole.

DETERMINATION OF WATER HOLDING CAPACITY OF RED SOIL

PROCEDURE:

  1. 100 gm of dry sample was taken.
  2. The funnel was set with filter paper on measuring cylinder.
  3. The sample was added on the filter paper. Then 200 ml water was added into the sample.
  4. The sample was kept for 20 minutes and the reading of water retained in measuring cylinder was taken.
  5. Then the water holding capacity of soil was determined by using following formula.

Water holding capacity =

{(Total water added – Water retained in measuring cylinder) / Dry weight of sample} * 100

OBSERVATION:

1.Weight of soil= 100gm

2.Total water added= 200ml

3. Water remained in the measuring cylinder= 150ml

CALCULATIONS:

Water holding capacity of red soil

={(200-150)/100}*100

=50%

DETERMINATION OF WATER HOLDING CAPACITY OF BLACK SOIL

PROCEDURE:

  1. 100 gm of dry sample was taken.

3.Water remained in the measuring cylinder= 115ml

CALCULATIONS:

Water holding capacity of black soil

={(200-115)/100}*100

=85%

DETERMINATION OF WATER HOLDING CAPACITY OF VA SOIL

PROCEDURE:

  1. 100 gm of dry sample was taken.

3.Water remained in the measuring cylinder= 170ml

CALCULATIONS:

Water holding capacity of VA soil

={(200-170)/100}*100

=30%

Irrigation Applied

Date:13/06/2022

According To Sonal mam instruction, I clean some hoops around the soil laboratory for planting some plants.

Date:14/06/2022

At that day, I have seen that some dogs disturbed our soil bed by digging out the soil in the bed. This is considered as external factor.

Date:26/06/2022

Spinach seeds in some beds are seen to be germinated.

Growing Spinach
