• Objective – To set up the Black water treatment system for ladies hostel of VA.

27/06/2022 to 15/07/2021

For Black Water Recycling System For Ladies Hostel we designed bubbling system with MBBR (moving bed biofilm reactor). For black water recycling system we used bubbling (aeration) and MBBR. With the help of Bubbling we maintained aerobic condition and MBBR helps to activated sludge aeration and it gives space for biofilm formation. This system promotes the growth of aerobic micro-organisms which helps to drop the COD, BOD and TDS up to 50% with in 24hrs.

lab scale experiment for black water system –

  • Material required –
    1. 15 lit bucket
    2. 2 Air bubblers ( 2 watt each)
    3. MBBR ( 1 lit )
  • Methodology –

For lab scale experiment ,I have taken 10 lit of black water in one bucket . in that bucket 1 lit of MBBR were added and for aeration purpose 4 watt bubblers were used. set up was observed for near 42 hours.

In this study, blackwater treatment is performed by using bubbling systems. The observation is focused on decrease in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), TDS during processing.

  • Initial analysis of black water sample –
 CODTDS
1938 mg/lit1420 ppm
table. initial readings
  • Observation after 24 and 40 hours –
SampleCODTDS
After 24 hours918 mg/lit1129 ppm
After 40 hours612 mg/lit1007 ppm
table . Readings after 24 and 40 hours
  • Conclusion –

I have observed that within 24 hours COD of black water get reduced by 50 % . In this method high amount of aeration is required.

After lab scale experiment, I started to do work on pilot scale treatment on black water system.

Pilot scale setup for black water system –

16/07/2022 to 25/07/2022

IBC tank setup
  • Material required –
    1. 1000 lit IBC tank
    2. Air pump (58 watt)
    3. MBBR (20 lit)
    4. Plumbing pipes
  • Methodology – For black water treatment system, ,I have taken 1000 lit of black water in one IBC tank , in that tank 20 lit of MBBR were added and for aeration purpose 58 watt bubblers were used. In this study, blackwater treatment is performed by using bubbling systems. The observation is focused on decrease in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), TDS during processing.

  • Observation after 24 hours of black water system –
 CODTDS

Conclusion –

After 24 hours, I have observed that the COD is reduced by 25% . We have to increase the time of aeration.
