DEEP WATER CULTURE

21/07/2022

Deep water culture (DWC) is a hydroponic method of plant production by means of suspending the plant roots in a solution of nutrient-rich, oxygenated water.

  In fact, the name “deep” water culture comes from the fact that the roots of the plants are completely submerged in water at all points

We Checked the leakages in the  bed of the DWC and repaired the leaks by covering the holes using sellotape. Then I filled the water in the DWC bed.

Procedure:

  1. To calculate volume of water I measured the length and width of the DWC bed.
  1. Structure of bed is not uniform for all sides, so we have taken values for different point also.
  2. Calculated volume of water

Calculate the average height by using the heights at different points.

h1 = 0.1 m;

h2 = 0.13m;

h3 = 0.12m;

h4 = 0.8m;

h5 = 0.12m;

H (Average Height) = h1+h2+h3+h4+h5 /5

H = (0.1+0.13+0.12+0.8+0.12)/5

H = 0.11 m

L= 3.4 m;                   w = 1.1 m

V = l×w×h

    = 3.4 *1.1*0.11

    = 0.4114 m3

V = 411.4 Liter

  • Then for the oxygen supply, I added oxygen bubbler to the water.
  • Then I filled the cups with the coco powder and planted spinach in it.
  • Then I put the cups in the thermocol.
  • After finishing the setup, I measured the pH, EC and TDS of the water.

Readings:

pH = 8.1

EC = 434

TDS = 204

First Dosing:

I added the following nutrients to the DWC water:

  1. Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)
  2. Calcium Nitrate (CaNO3)
  3. Monoammonium phosporus (NH3PO4)
  4. Potassium Sulphate (K2SO4)
  5. Magnesium Sulphate (MgSO4)
NutrientsFor 1 LiterFor 411 Liter
Potassium Nitrate500 mg205.5 gm
Calcium Nitrate192 mg78.912 gm
Monoammonium phosporous132 mg34.11 gm
Potassium Sulphate288 mg118.368 gm
Magnesium Sulphate631 mg259.34 gm

After completion of dosing, I measured pH of the water. The pH reading is 7.1 and for maintaining maintaining pH level I added 1 ml of phosphoric acid.(1ml)
